Founded in 1991 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana by Matt Chambers, Confederate Motor Company set out to create machines utilizing a holistic, avant-garde process for celebrating the art of rebellion.
Motorcycles have long represented rugged individualism; the Confederate machines evoke principled individuality through simple, pure, minimal, skeletal form language, which is at once, technical and primitive.
Always energized more by passion and romance than solid capitalization, the autumn of 2005 found our team on the verge of acute dream fulfillment, with the Hellcat approaching full production and the Wraith only months from finalization.
No one could have anticipated what happened next...
On August 29, 2005, the devastation of Hurricane Katrina struck. While Chambers was traveling home after visiting with one of the company’s investors in the Middle East, he learned that the Confederate factory would be one of many completely destroyed by the infamous storm. Production was halted; the factory was leveled; faith and persistence is all that remained.
Unable to find any suitable facility in or around his New Orleans home, Chambers began the process of visiting other locations throughout the United States in order to find a new home for our company. On December 15, 2005, Chambers announced that Confederate would relocate near the world’s greatest collection of motorcycles, home to the prestigious Barber Motorsports Museum in Birmingham, Alabama. The foundational rebuild of our version of the American dream could now begin in earnest.
Leaning on the words he penned at their founding, Chambers knew what mattered, redoubled efforts to make the machine better, by far, than they would have been absent the Katrina challenge.
B architecture, which underpins their Wraith, was completely rethought. Every system and subsystem of the machines was reevaluated and reengineered. Three distinct prototypes, utilizing entirely new platform architecture relative to the New Orleans prototype, were built. Any idea of costs, whatsoever, was thrown out. Only ideas concerning how to create the greatest Wraith they possibly could create were tolerated. The resultant B120 Wraith achieves the pinnacle of luxury with a sporting demeanor, which belies the conceptual elegance and beauty illuminated by the organically pure truth of the design.
They have frozen their Wraith for the creation of but 250 examples.
